Junior High Grades 6 - 8
Welcome to the Junior High Youth Ministry page!
All ages of religious education and youth ministry here at St Michael’s share the same vision and mission statements:
"Inspired by the Holy Spirit, St. Michael's Youth Ministry is growing next-generation disciples who, knowing the love of Christ and the Word of God, will be visible witnesses of His love to their family, peers, and the world."
"Be loved through the sacraments. Love and welcome others through service and evangelization. Make lasting disciples through solid education of the Catholic faith."
Our mission statement reflects how we will achieve our vision statement. Here’s how we live our mission statement in our weekly religious education classes:
Be loved through the sacraments- Not a week goes by without prayer in our youth ministry. We teach our junior high youth that prayer is simply a conversation with God, and that one does not need to be a biblical scholar to speak with Him. We offer adoration, confession, and Mass periodically throughout the year. As a parent, YOU are the one, who by example, teaches your student of the importance of fulfilling their Sunday obligation as Catholics.
Love and welcome others through service and evangelization- “To be Christian is to do what Jesus did—serve.” This quote from Pope Francis embodies what we instill in our junior high students—by teaching them the value of service and encouraging them to be involved in the parish, we are forming present and future members who will actively contribute to the Body of Christ.
Make lasting disciples through solid education of the Catholic faith- Faced with a society that continually attacks the Catholic faith, we seek to equip our junior high students with foundational knowledge of the faith that will continue to grow as they go into high school and throughout their adult life:
6th grade curriculum: Decision Point (an overview of the Catholic Faith)
7th grade curriculum: The Teen Timeline (an overview of the Bible and how all of the books fit into the ‘big picture’)
8th grade curriculum: Theology of the Body for Teens (exploring the beauty of man and woman and the value of chastity and marriage)
In addition to all of the information above, we strive for one more thing: FUN. Junior High is a pivotal time in every adolescent’s life; the friends they make now will be the friends that will influence the formative years of their adult life. Our goal is to teach them that true, lasting friendships are friendships made in Christ.
“Dear young friends:
If we want it to have real meaning and fulfillment, as you want and as you deserve, I say to each one of you, 'Put on faith', and your life will take on a new flavour, it will have a compass to show you the way; 'put on hope' and every one of your days will be enlightened and your horizon will no longer be dark, but luminous; 'put on love', and your life will be like a house built on rock, your journey will be joyful, because you will find many friends to journey with you.”
-Pope Francis, World Youth Day 2013
